We are pleased to announce our 4th National Tutoring Seminar. The focus of the seminar will be on contemporary narratives of personal tutoring and academic advising including work being done by colleagues to enhance student learning and success.

First Plenary Contribution: Personal Tutoring in Higher Education - Where Now and Where Next?

Mike Laycock, Higher Education Consultant – author of the  SEDA Special on Personal Tutoring.

British higher education has always had a reputation for good personal tutoring but, as Mike Laycock writes: “… the personal tutor system has been under strain for some time.” In this extensive literature survey he extracts the core issues, such as which model a university might be using, who is doing the tutoring, what sort of tutorial relationships are they forming, what might be the benefits and the costs, and how any system might be supported.

Third Plenary contribution: Intervention for Success Project

Alison Wilkinson and Ben Walker, University of Lincoln.

Intervention for Success is a collaborative project between the Universities of Coventry, Huddersfield, Lincoln and Manchester Metropolitan University.

It focuses on tackling differential achievement, by developing practical activities and resources that will support students at risk of leaving or not achieving their potential. 

The interventions will be available for all students, but draw on national and institutional research about how best to support, for example, commuter students, students from disadvantaged social groups, students from vocational backgrounds and some categories of Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) students.

Intervention for Success develops and share ways of using data to more accurately identify students potentially at risk of leaving their courses early or of not fulfilling their full potential. It will also produce a new and more effective initial diagnostic test to develop and refine understanding of the needs of these groups of students.

Fourth Plenary Contribution: Raising Awareness, Raising Aspiration (RARA)

Sam Dent, RARA Project Manager, University of Sheffield.

RARA is dedicated to enhancing personal tutoring to ensure all students achieve their potential. The HEFCE funded project is committed to addressing barriers to student success through access to high quality academic support. RARA pilots improved policy,

practices and tools to tackle attainment gaps within higher education, especially among students from BME groups and lower socio-economic backgrounds. This personal tutoring pilot project is taking place at The University of Sheffield, King’s College London and The University of Portsmouth. The ultimate goal: provide research, case studies and tools that can be used on a national scale, and start a conversation around the role of personal tutoring in tackling attainment gaps.
